GORUCK Challenges do not have obstacles. They're military-grade bootcamps across an urban environment. Instead of crawling through mud, you do thousands of pushups, situps, crunches, burpees, deadman carries, relays, and basically every exercise you hate. In any weather. With 20 to 40lbs of weights. On gritty NYC streets. For half a day (Light). 24 hours (Tough). Or 72 hours (Heavy). With no sleep. Ridiculous.
Yes, I know what you're thinking. Why would anyone...? It's definitely not for the faint of heart. In fact, it's not really for normal people. It's for people who thrive on sacrifice and teamwork. For anyone who depends on a community to get through all sorts of shit. You do it for the man or woman standing next to you, because they're doing it, for themselves, their families, and for you. The beer you share at the end is the sweetest beer you've ever had. The bond you share with the man or woman you run with is so strong, that after I did my Light in Sept 2015, another Challenger spotted me snowboarding on a mountain in Vermont in 2016, and just like that, I had a new brother.
