Outerthere Runs Tough Mudder Half Tri State!

We're running this obstacle course race Jersey. Although there's public transit, it's a 2 hour trip and no one's trying to do that before a race. So, we're carpooling.

OCRs are what's up. Some people run these to compete. I've been running the "beginner" version of all of these every summer since 2015 because I LOVE the obstacles. This one is 5 miles, but who cares. 13 obstacles of awesome should be enough for us. And we can do them more than once! Whaaa?! This one's in NJ so we're carpooling down there. Tickets are up to $99 for the Half (but use discount code "EVENTBRITE20" for 20% off. There's a link at the top of the Eventbrite page where you're selecting your tickets that says "Apply Promo Code". That's where you enter it.) There's no team or race times allowed at this point, so when we arrive, we will get ourselves on the same wave. Get your tix here and then come back to let me know if you need a ride. Check the clip of our last two OCR's and sign up.

Outerthere Runs Ragnar! Plus Hiking + Festival!

We're running in Jersey so we're carpooling.

Ragnar is a relay race. A team of 4, 6, or 8 split 200 f_ckin' miles(!!!) into 3 loops of varying elevations and distance and repeat over and over, day and night, for 2 days. I know, sum bullsh_t. And they actually charge you $200 for this like, are you serious?! Anyway, it goes overnight, with runners alternating between running and sleeping. Don't laugh. This is an actual thing people do. It's endorsed by NYRR and there's a festival village for supporters. So nope, I ain't running that bullsh_t. Outerthere superstar Anna is with her crew, because she's awesome (or completely nuts. Jury's still out). I'll be there throughout the 2 days to support and pretend like I'm a runner with my fancy running shoes and Outerthere gear. But I'll be in a great park and may do some hiking with side missions. Check the clip of the last 50k Anna did and sign up to be part of her team ('cause you insane like she is), be a cheerleader and/or do some light hiking and side missions with me.

Outerthere Climbs The Gunks for Beginners!

We're climbing the legendary Gunks in NY. We're taking Trailsways Bus to New Paltz from Port Authority and meeting our guide who'll take us the rest of the way.

You know that feeling when you finished that project at work. That crazy complicated, too big too handle project, and you start getting emails from everyone and pats on the back because no one else could have done it. That's pretty much what it feels like to reach the top of a climb. Every time. Except you're sweating more. If you've never climbed or never climbed outdoors; or if you've climbed a few times before, you definitely want to come out on this trip. It's gonna be dope. $130/person (when 4 or more sign up) includes harness, shoes, helmet, and rope. There will some hiking with all your gear before we actually get to a free route, but it'll be worth it. This will be a full day trip with a pit stop at the local brewery to crack open cold ones. Word. Check the clip from our last trip then sign up.

Outerthere Runs BoneFrog DC!

We're running this obstacle course race in DC. We are staying at a local campsite overnight Friday.

OCRs are what's up. Some people run these to compete. I've been running the "beginner" version of all of these every summer since 2015 because I LOVE the obstacles. This one's in DC so we're getting there Friday afternoon and camping locally. Prefer something better before a big race? AirBnb has a ton of options below 100. Couchsurfing has even more free options. No car? No problem? Find a good bus or train option with this site. I will get up early and shuttle you to the race from a central location.

Bonefrog tickets are $87 (including fees) for the 3-mile sprint this week through Friday, however, BoneFrog offers discounts to vets, military, students, cops, ems, and fire. If you don't fit any of those categories, you can still get 30% off any race with code "EOS30". When you register, sign up to the 10:30a wave and the "Outerthere fam" team. Let me know if you registered for any other category.

Check the clip of our last two OCR's and sign up.

Outerthere Gets Squeezed!

We're going to Mohonk Preserve in NY. Meeting at trailhead.

This is a legendary hike because of a particular feature called the Lemon Squeeze. It's basically a rock climbing wall where they built a ladder you have to climb and when you get to the top, you have to squeeze through. It's no joke. And neither is the trail to get there, dope and scrambly. Although it's a short, 4-mile loop, these and other features make it a solid 9 out of 10 for difficulty. So, this is a scouting trip, since we've never done it and it's for advanced hikers only. (Check the difficulty ratings). Check the clip below to see how we hike and sign up below. No charge to go. Let me know if you're going and I'll try to arrange a carpool for you.

It's $35 for an unlimited all-day pass on Groupon (which comes with a complimentary inner tube, drawstring bag, mouth guard, and a hat. Oh sh_t!) It's kid friendly, food trucky and flip floppy. Word. Outerthere Keeps it 100!

We're going to Harriman State Park!

So I'm doing the math, right, and apparently, this is Outerthere's 100th trip (give or take) --jaw dropped-- Where does the time go? (Missed a few trips? Check out #whatyoumissed). So, we gon' celebrate. In honor of this trip, we're doing a hike I've been wanting to do for years, Sloatsburg-to-Suffern, approx 20 miles. Yeah, I know what you thinking, "That's sum bullsh_t, Al". Normally, we break trips like this up into 2 days. But we gangsta and gonna make it happen in a single day. (This is a scouting trip. Check my difficulty ratings).

You can do it, yo. It's summer, days are longer, you've been in the gym all winter and if we start at 10:30a from Sloatsburg, we should be at Suffern by 7pm-ish, assuming no side missions or breaks. We hangin' in Suffern for celebratory dranks after. Word. It's gonna be legit. You know you down, son! If you've ever been out on any of the prior 99 trips, you're considered Outerthere family and if you're in the area, please come out on this trip! We're taking NJ Transit to the park. Hiking point-to-point. Taking train back. Plenty of parking if you want to drive. No charge to go. Word.

Family Day Hike!

  • Tuxedo Park Metro North Train Station (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

We're hiking from Tuxedo to Sloatsburg with an awesome picnic at Sebago Lake!

This hike is just under 10 miles, but before you say your kid can't handle that, yes, your kid can handle it. Once we get to Tuxedo, there's a 10 minute walk to the trailhead. From the trailhead, it's a 20 minute zig-zaggy hike up to the top of Tuxedo Ridge. You'll sweat, but that's the toughest part of the entire day. After that, it's a scrambly hike to Lake Sebago, where we'll stop for about an hour for a nice leisurely lunch. Afterwards, we hike along a flowing creek to the the Harriman State Park Visitors Center at Sloatsburg, with a couple of stops along the way to soak our feet in the creek. The visitor center is a good place to call for a taxi if you're done OR we can continue to walk to the end of the trail at Sloatsburg. At the end point, it's a 15 minute walk back to the train station. Oh and the best part, we'll have an honest-to-goodness "tree doctor", Dr. Chris Borman, Doctor of Plant Health (University of Nebraska) and Senior Forester at Manhattan Forestry at NYC Parks who works to keep NYC trees healthy and happy. He'll be answering most of the nature questions you'll have about the foliage we'll encounter. I asked him to come because why not get your learn on while you hike. Word. It's a complete family day that even you grown ups will like.

The Great Inflatable Race

We're going to Brooklyn's Aviator Sports Complex!

A good OCR is just what you need to get your priorities right. But an OCR with inflatable balloons is what you need to make those priorities fun. Word.

Last year, I did a version of this and it was soooo much fun, I'm doing it again this summer. (Shout out to Outerthere friend Eileen Y for recommending both!) Don't let it fool you though. This ain't a race. It's just bouncy goodness. We're doing it together, at a fun pace, so don't feel like you can't go 'cause you'll slow everyone else down. You won't. Even the kids can roll through, if you got 'em. But if you've ever been in a bouncy castle or on a trampoline you know that bouncing around is also a good cardio workout. So, yeah, make exercise great again! Check out the race and register here. Sign up for the 9am run under 'Outerthere' team. (Later time slots are full, which means bottle necks.) And if you're a Groupon member, get your discount here. And after all that, come back here and sign up on the form below to let me know you goin'. Yeah!

We're running at the big ass Henry Kaufman Campground on Staten Island!

Some Outerthere fam have been asking about doing runs. I'm like, nah, I don't do that. But then, I found myself running around my local park totally not because of peer pressure. I realized, I can do it, but still felt I needed the proper motivation. Well, here's my muhfkn motivation - this 5k is hosted by Outerthere homies Outdoorfest (June 3rd to June 12th) on a campground and, yo, at the end, there's a camp out, live music, and yoga. Word.

So, let's get the squad together and do thisss! Register here. When you click tickets, enter "outerthere" for the promo code for 20% off your ticket. Then, come back here to sign up below and let me know if you doing to do it.

4th Annual Beginner Camping Trip!

4th Annual Beginner Camping Trip!

We're hiking the Appalachian Trail east of the Hudson from Peekskill to Garrison, NY!

Oh snap! This the 4th annual! See the ridiculousness that went down last year and try not to miss this one!

I've never done this before but was curious so it'll be a scouting trip. That said, I already checked the maps and it should be manageable for beginners looking to step things. However, it's not get off the train and boom, trailhead. We gotta work to get to the park, work to get to the campsite, and work to get out of the park on the other side. Approximately 13 miles. But mostly over a level stretch of the Appalachian Trail. But you won't notice it anyway since the entire first half of this trip is overlooking a beautiful Hudson River. Word. It's gonna be dope.

Snack/breakfast sponsored by @MunkPack

These squeeze packs are dope. I first tried them last Feb (2016) and was like, you know what, they'd be perfect for camping. So, I called them up and they said, you right, Al. So, I'll have some for everyone. Good lookin' out, MunkPack!

Gear sponsored by Traverse Outfitters @trvrse

If you've been to this site before, you know I've been a big supporter of Traverse for a hot minute. Part of it is how much I regret spending soooo much money for my first epic camping trip. (Looking back, I was such a nube). To this day, I barely used most of that gear. Today, gear's so fresh that being a gearhead is like being crackhead except being a crackhead is cheaper. The point is, don't be a crackhead. Rent out the gear first before you buy... with Traverse. Borrowing is great. But nothing beats carrying a backpack fitted to you or sleeping in a clean, light-weight tent. (Friends who let you borrow tents always seem to have the heaviest, most complex-to-assemble tents. They ain't your friends. You need to train like C. T. Fletcher and have a Ph.d to carry and assemble. Word.) Anyway, click here or on the ad above to get to Traverse and get your gear. So yeah, this all means that Traverse is now sponsoring us, too. Word.

From Wikipedia

Holi is a Hindu spring festival celebrated in India and Nepal, also known as the "festival of colours" or the "festival of love". The festival signifies the victory of good over evil, the arrival of spring, end of winter, and for many a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive, and repair broken relationships. It is also celebrated as a thanksgiving for a good harvest.

From The Event Organizer's Facebook page

Join a beautiful crowd at Stage48 and get painted in reds, yellows, greens, pinks and enjoy the Festival of colors in style with food, drinks, and the amazing beats by NYC's Top Entertainers.

5th Outertheresary Hike!

We're going to the old Indian Hill Ruins!

This is actually the real 4th Outertheresary. I got it wrong last year. Oh well. I'm just going to go up numerically from here and leave it to myth and legend to sort it out.

This is a scrambly, but solid hike. Good for beginners and experienced hikers alike. However, if you've got crappy ankles or knees, bring your trekking poles and braces.

Outerthere Family Hike Day! It's fo' da kids, fam!

Hudson Highlands State Park Arden Point and Glenclyffe Trails!

Every year I get asked to do a family trip for ya'll chilrens. But this the year we're gonna make it happen with the help of Anna P, Jennifer E, and Ben W! Word. Shout out to ya'll, homies!

Anyway, this is how it's going down. At approximately 11:00am, we're all meeting in the parking lot of Garrison, NY. You can drive there, there's a huge parking lot, or you can roll with me (sign up for details on taking Metro North train with me). From there, we'll all gather up, wrangle the kids, and hike Hudson Highlands State Park to Sugarhill Loaf, a kid-friendly mountain overlooking the Hudson. The entire hike is picturesque, easy for any physical fitness level, and crosses a ton of interesting sites (check the Outerthere Difficulty Ratings here to get an idea of what I mean about easy or Beginner). When we get to the Sugarloaf, we'll stop, eat lunch, and head back to Garrison station. The entire hike should take approximately 3 to 4 hours (not including commuting time), but we'll keep a good pace and wait for everyone so could be more or less. The point of this trip is getting out, not crushing miles or beating fastest times. So, sort out your work schedule, do your errands during the week (Sunday, you may want to just chill), and tell your friends with kids. This is gonna be a dope trip.

If yes, you further acknowledge that you will be assuming responsibility for your kids behavior and safety. (I know, that sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised). You should definitely read the Waiver and Fine print, too, to understand who you're coming out with if you don't already know.

Outerthere Rides!

Outerthere partners with OvRride, the #1 tour operator to snow resorts on the east coast. On a typical, snowy weekend, OvRride sends 20 to 30 buses up to the mountains, and Outerthere is an official trip leader on one of those buses.

I LOVE DAY TRIPS! They're way more affordable than a weekend trip because OvRride gets that crazy group rate, leaving you more money for drinks and a free day to rest at home. Just get on the bus and chill. A typical day trip consists of:

  • A mad early morning (starting at 3am and every hour thereafter until 9am) pickup at a convenient location in your borough
  • A 3- to 5-hour bus trip to the mountain (depending on where it is) where you can nap off the previous night's alcohol poisoning, and when you wake up, I will personally serve you water and freshly baked breakfast bagels with creamcheese (Whaaaa?!)
  • Then when we get to the mountain, I give you your lift, rental, and lesson tickets, you get your gear and ride and ski all day. Need a break? There are dope bars and you will find me at it around 2p, killing some chilli or ridiculous, maple-syrup glazed grill cheese with a cold beer
  • And finally, around 4p, you load back up on the bus for the trip back down to your drop off spot(sorry, homies, apres happens on the bus, with cold beers and cheesy movies. But it's still dope).

Purchase your lift tickets, bus ride, rentals, and lessons.

HEADS UP, FAM! THE TIMES POSTED ON THE SITE OR ANYWHERE ELSE (LIKE FACEBOOK INVITES) ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE AS THE TRIP DAY GETS CLOSER. ONLY THE EMAIL I SEND 24 TO 48 HOURS PRIOR TO THE TRIP DATE AND ONLY AFTER YOU'VE SIGNED UP VIA THE FORM ON THE TRIP INVITE WILL CONTAIN THE MOST ACCURATE TIMES FOR OUR TRIP.

No snow gear? No problem! All the mountains provide basic snowboard and ski rentals, bindings, and poles. Some also provide helmets (helmets are important. Don't f_ck around and get a concussion, yo). None rent visors, so you may want to purchase on your own (not recommended if you stick to the bunny slopes, and yo, ain't no shame in riding bunny slopes if you're a beginner). You can also rent your gear for the season, if you know you'll be going up alot. And when you're ready to buy, there are major gear sales at the start and end of the season.

We're hiking Breakneck Ridge!

I don't know about you, but when it's snowing, I want to go hiking anyway. Snow or no, we're hiking Breackneck Ridge in the cold. Because we're gangster like that. Depending on the weather, this hike may be point to point or a loop. This is an ADVANCED hike.

You can easily spend a fortune to get all the right gear for this kind of trip. (Curious what kind of gear you need? Check out the Outerthere gear list for this time of year.) However, that's not recommended for a one-off trip like this. If you don't have any friends you can borrow from (or a trust fund that won't even feel this kind of spending), then check out Outerthere homies Traverse Outfitters, the largest outdoor rental guys in NYC. Ask for Avi and tell 'em Al sentcha. He'll hook you up with whatever you're missing and you can save that money for beers, your dealer, or diapers, whatever your priorities, yo.

Mappy Hour NYC Holiday Party

  • 333 Douglass Street Brooklyn, NY, 11217 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Outerthere is gonna party like a rockstar! Word. During the season, I'm going to post casual invites to everything from happy hours, tastings, and other social events I get invited to. Mostly it's because not everyone wants to go hard in the woods on Saturdays, but they still want to stay connected to Outerthere. So, to kick off this new situation, I'm inviting you to my homegirl's Sarah Knapp's Mappy Hour! Mappy Hour is dope. There's beers, hosted in some kinda community spot for outdoorsy people (think REI, but there's actually a ton of spots in town and Sarah finds them all) and plenty of guests speakers and awesome peeps to meet. I've been to a few and think they're awesome, and you will, too! So, peep the invite and I'll see you there! Word.

PS Check out my profile on the Mappy Hour site. Yeah man. Get yours, too!

I seriously can't believe this is the 4th year in a row I'll be doing this with you guys. Let's make some more crazy stories happen, ya'll! Here we go.... It’s the peak of fall colors and instead of heading to overpriced revelries in any of the dozen beer gardens through the big city, or driving upstate to drink with “conservative Republicans”, bring your favorite German beer and sausage and we’ll do it like German’s used to do it - sharing our beers, not charging for them - back before it got all commercialized!  Word.  (If you’re actually going to Germany for Ocktoberfest, you’re excused.  Also, I don’t really know if Germans shared their beer back in the day.)  And from what previous campers have told me, "Your first sausage at Al's camping trip is the best sausage you've ever had!" Seriously.

Some important notes about this trip: This is a strenuous, backpacking trip because of all the food and drinks we'll be carrying, in addition to our tents, sleeping bags, and other gear, across really challenging terrain and weather, so avoid overpacking (see my recommended packing list).  Pro Tip: To keep your pack weight even lower, wear layers (preferably merino wool) and expect to be in the same clothes the whole weekend, including sleeping. If you need some packing advice, gear, or anything else you're not sure of, contact me.

Additionally, Be prepared to help “set up camp”. What does this mean?  Our campsite is raw land: no structures, no showers, and it’ll get below freezing overnight.  So, we’ll be collecting firewood, prepping food on rocks, and working to light our fire.  (If you don’t know how to do any of these things, you're going to learn.) There are also no bathrooms, no port-a-potties, and no showers, and if this ain’t your thing, you may not have a good time. Then again, you’ll be warm and tipsy before you notice, so it might be the best camping adventure you’ve ever had!

If you’ve car camped, camped at lodges, or RV’d before, and want to step up your camping game (especially if you're thinking about an epic thruhike somewhere) this is a great trip to transition into doing some real camping a.k.a. backpacking.  And there will be beer! Sign up below to find out where we'll be meeting and what to bring.

Finally, as a reminder, I'm planning a Sunday Funday visit to a whiskey distillery on Sunday, October 23rd, to stock up on supplies before the trip. You should go.

You can easily spend over $1,000 to get all the right gear for this trip. (Curious what kind of gear you need? Check out the Outerthere gear list for this time of year.) However, that's not recommended for an overnight trip.

SUNDAY FUNDAY - WHISKEY TOUR!

King's County Distillery (yes, at Brooklyn Navy Yard, 299 Sands Street) is hosting a tour of their whiskey distillery at 3pm and 5p. I'll be there for the 3p tour to stock up for our upcoming camping trip, but will hang out in their open-air communal tables at their Gate House bar at least until 6p-ish. You should come. $8 admission, and yes, there will be plenty of tastings. Word. That's what's up.
